Can't sleep tonight, probably because I've got this wacky idea running through my head...
Combining the Association Renewal blog's concept about DUMB goals and the Association Innovation blog's perpetual eulogizing of best practices, should associations be on the lookout for worst practices? And not necessarily to learn what not to try. How about discovering a worst practice at one association, and giving it a try in another? Either correct the fatal flaw or determine that the cause of the failure in association A doesn't apply or won't repeat itself in association B.
I can't seem to make the jump from the theoretical to the practical here, but maybe something will dawn on me later.
Now that I've recorded the thought, perhaps I'll be able to sleep.
Stand by...

As the Guinness commercial guys woud say...BRILLIANT! You should stay up late more often.
Seriously, I like where you're headed. The Best practice concept really narrows down what is possible. While the best practice concept could prevent people from reinventing the wheel, it can also prevent them from inventing something else. There are probably lots of valuable ideas within practices that didn't work, but if we never examine them we'll never find them.
In our association, our CEO came up with the idea a few years ago for what we call "Boy, Did I Make a Mistake," a session we hold at our conference where members share things they tried that didn't work out.
Seems like a great idea, but so many people hate to admit something didn't work. One might have to do some spinning to actually get submissions...
