Yesterday I had the pleasure of listening to a short speech by Del. David Poisson, CAE, member of Virginia's House of Delegates from Loudoun County (32nd District). The former CEO of three associations (Tire Industry Association, Computer Leasing and Remarketing Association, and Uniform and Textile Service Association) addressed attendees of the Virginia Society of Association Executives monthly luncheon meeting.
The first-term Democrat, who defeated a four-term incumbent Republican, spoke to us about areas where he felt associations were falling short. Specifically, research and advocacy. He told us how many bills at the General Assembly are passed without supporting research, but rather anecdotal evidence. He also stressed the importance of advocacy, but not just doing it, but also educating members about our efforts and the legislative process. The delegate offered some stories (both serious and humorous) on how his background as an association executive has served him well in his brief tenure as a legislator.
Be sure to visit Del. Poisson's blog and home page. And check out this audio interview with Del. Poisson from February 2005.
